    • Consider Offering Internships or Apprenticeships: This can be a great way to evaluate potential long-term employees while providing valuable experience to newcomers in the field.

    For Applicants:

    • Research the Business: Understanding the company’s background, mission, and culture can help tailor your application and prepare for interviews.
    • Highlight Soft Skills: Along with technical skills, emphasize your communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities, which are highly valued in small community businesses.

This article first appeared in the Winter 2023 newsletter for Community of Care.

For 20 years, Community of Care has been serving older adults throughout the 1,700 square mile area of rural Cass County! We began serving clients in Arthur in 2003. The Casselton office and volunteer transportation program was added in 2005. During those 20 years, we have assisted older adults with information, referrals for service, Medicare Part D drug plan enrollment, help completing fuel/food/Medicaid applications, transportation to medical appointments, education and socialization events. Faith Community Nurse (FCN) program was added in 2012. Our FCNs provide outreach visits to help older adults understand health conditions, doctor’s orders and medications. Bone Builder classes are held in 6 locations in rural Cass.

What began 20 years ago has grown to serve greater number of clients and greater needs. Our programs and services have always been based on the needs of our clients.

Summer is a great time to plan socialization events for older adults in rural Cass. This picture is from a trip to a RedHawks game in July 2023.

    All reactions:

When Community of Care started in 2003, the decision was made to provide our services FREE-OF-CHARGE! In 2023, that continues to be the case—we DO NOT CHARGE for services, regardless of a person’s economic situation.

You might wonder how we are able to provide our programs and services. Thanks to many grantors and donors, we are able to continue providing services FREE-OF-CHARGE. In 2022, 67% of our budget was provided through local fundraisers, grants and https://communityofcarend.com/how-to-help/membership/make-a-donation.htmldonations!

We also rely on our DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS to meet clients needs. We COULD NOT DO WHAT WE DO, without the partnership of our volunteers and donors!

We are excited to see what the next 20 years brings for Community of Care. One thing we do know, we will ALWAYS put our clients’ need first as we help older adults continue to say, “There’s no place like HOME in rural Cass County”!

Casselton Business Association offers a big benefit that you’re probably not taking advantage of as a member. It’s one of our most valuable offerings - the Expense Match Benefit. This unique program is not just about financial support; it's an opportunity to strengthen your business through collaboration and innovation. Let's explore how you can make the most of this benefit and why working together is a game-changer for your business.

    Understanding the Expense Match Benefit

The Expense Match is a unique program designed to foster collaboration and mutual growth among our members. In simple terms, the CBA will match expenses up to $50 for each member participating in a collaborative marketing effort. This means that when two or more CBA members join forces for a marketing project—like an advertisement, a special event, or a promotional campaign—each member can receive up to $50 in matching funds as a reimbursement from the CBA.

To be eligible, the marketing initiative must involve at least two CBA members. The process is straightforward: after completing the collaborative project, members submit their receipts along with a brief description of the initiative to the CBA for review. Once approved, the members will receive their expense match, injecting additional value back into their businesses. Please note, each business is eligible to participate in this program once per year.

This benefit is more than just financial support; it's an encouragement for members to think outside the box, to reach out to fellow members, and to build a network that is stronger together. By pooling resources and ideas, businesses can achieve greater visibility and impact than they might individually, leading to increased customer engagement and community presence.

Why Collaborate? The Power of Partnership

Collaboration is the lifeblood of innovation and growth, especially in a vibrant business community like Casselton. When CBA members come together, the potential for success multiplies. Collaborative marketing initiatives encourage businesses to connect, share insights, and learn from each other. This networking leads to stronger relationships within the CBA, fostering an environment of mutual support and collective problem-solving.

    • Amplifying Visibility: Joint marketing efforts have a compounding effect on visibility. When businesses collaborate, they pool their audiences, leading to a wider reach and increased brand exposure. This can be particularly effective in attracting new customers who might not have been reached by single business marketing efforts.
    • Innovative Approaches: Working with fellow members encourages creativity. It allows businesses to think outside their usual marketing strategies, leading to innovative and often more effective campaigns. Whether it's a joint event or a cross-promotion, these fresh approaches can resonate strongly with customers.

Creative Ways to Use the Expense Match Benefit

Let’s explore 10 creative ways you can use the Expense Match benefit to collaborate and grow your business. We offer these as examples to help you come up with your own ideas.

    Joint Seasonal Promotions:

    • Small businesses can team up for holiday-themed promotions, such as a "Shop Local for Christmas" campaign. Each participating store might offer a special discount or a unique holiday-themed product.
    • Joint events like an Easter egg hunt in local stores can be organized, where children and families visit different businesses for treats or special offers.

    Themed Events or Markets:

    • Organize monthly or quarterly themed markets, such as an Artisans’ Fair, or a Vintage Goods Market. These events can showcase local products and talents, fostering a sense of community pride.
    • Special events like a “Taste of Casselton” food festival where local restaurants, cafes, and food vendors collaborate to offer samples of their dishes to the community.

Social Media Contests for Local Engagement:

    • Launch a “Shop Local Selfie” contest where customers are encouraged to post selfies with their purchases from local stores. Each post could tag the business and use a specific hashtag, entering them into a weekly or monthly drawing.

Educational Workshops or Seminars by Local Experts:

    • Host workshops that tap into the unique skills of local business owners, such as a gardening workshop by a local nursery, a DIY home repair seminar by a hardware store, or a cooking class by a local chef.

Joint Advertising in Local Media for Collective Impact:

    • Small businesses can pool funds to create more impactful advertising campaigns in local newspapers, radio, and possibly regional TV channels. This could include a "Shop in Casselton" campaign featuring multiple businesses.

    Tips for Successful Collaborations

While the potential of collaborative efforts is immense, the key to unlocking this potential lies in how effectively these collaborations are planned and executed. Whether you're pooling resources for a local event or launching a joint marketing campaign, the success of these initiatives hinges on strategic planning and careful execution. Let's dive into some essential tips that can help make your collaborative projects not only successful but also sustainable and rewarding for all parties involved.

    • Choosing the Right Partners: Look for businesses with complementary services or customer bases to maximize the impact of your collaboration. A good partnership is based on mutual benefit, shared goals, and a similar customer ethos. For example, a bookstore and a café can create a reading and relaxation haven, appealing to similar customer interests.
    • Effective Planning: Set clear goals, budgets, and roles for each participant to ensure smooth execution. A well-structured plan with defined objectives, timelines, and responsibilities reduces confusion and increases efficiency. Regular meetings and open communication channels are crucial in this phase.
    • Measuring Success: Use metrics like foot traffic, sales, social media engagement, and customer feedback to gauge the effectiveness of your collaboration. This not only helps in understanding the impact of the collaboration but also provides insights for future projects.

    How to Get Started

Ready to collaborate? Reach out to fellow CBA members with your ideas. Once you've agreed on a project, plan it out and execute it. After the project, submit your receipts and a brief description to CBA for the expense match.

The Expense Match benefit is more than just a financial perk; it's a gateway to building stronger business networks and achieving collective success. We encourage all members to embrace this opportunity, work together, and witness the growth and opportunities that collaboration brings.

We are lucky to be able to reprint this story that was first published in the October 30, 2023 issue of the Cass County Reporter when it featured Casselton Rural Ambulance Service as part of its Salute to Emergency Responders; a special section inserted into the newspaper. To stay on top of all the latest Casselton news, we recommend a subscription to our hometown newspaper.

by Angela Kolden, Editor of the Cass County Reporter

The Casselton Rural Ambulance District recently purchased a brand new ambulance.

The 2023 E450 Super Duty Ford Chassis was retrofitted into an ambulance in Ohio and received in Casselton less than a month ago.

Ambulance Board member Adrian Kieffer said the $200,000 investment will benefit the community by providing reliability.

Casselton Rural Ambulance District Board Member Adrian Kieffer stands next to the new 2023 E450 Super Duty Ford ambulance rig the district purchased less than a month ago.  (Photo by Angela Kolden)

“We needed to replace the old one. We’ve had four breakdowns with it while on runs. Two with patients on board. Everything worked out OK, but the need for a new ambulance was tremendous.”

Having the new rig will also generate peace of mind for the ambulance district personnel.

“This new addition will reduce stress among personnel because they don’t have to worry about a breakdown,” said Kieffer, who is one of a five member board.

Other board members are Jerry Marx, Lori Grommesh, Mary McIntyre and Jim Jaeger.

In addition to the board, the ambulance district has the support of a management agreement with Ringdahl EMS. This partnership -- which is a combination of paid and volunteer members -- provides 24 hour a day, 7 day a week coverage to over 740 square miles of rural Cass County, extending north to County Road 4, south to Hwy 46, West to Barnes County and east to the Meridian in Mapleton.

A vote last November, approved the formation of a tax district that provides the addition of 6 mills to the ambulance district’s operating budget.

With a board that strives to be financial efficient, Kieffer said it has Jim Jaeger to thank for his diligence in finding the ambulance. It came with a cost savings of about $80,000.

“Plus if we would’ve had to order it, it would have been 2 1/2 years out before we got it.”

Keiffer said the rig is not a diesel, which is something different, but so far personnel has reported a quieter cab that makes communication easier.

The new ambulance is also rigged with a power load cot featuring a battery-powered hydraulic system that raises and lowers the cot at the touch of a button.

“This will probably save us a work comp claim in the future,” Kieffer said, bestowing the benefits of the automated system.

The interior design was also reconfigured to allow improved patient access so that personnel can work on the patient from each side.

Crew safety was also considered in the new design, providing harnesses for the personnel so they are secured while working on patients.

The 2023 ambulance will serve along with the 2012 ambulance as primary transport units with the 2004 used only as back up.

Currently the Casselton Rural Ambulance District operates as a part-time ALS (Advanced Life Support) service that sometimes operates as a BLS (Basic Life Support) service.

The difference between the two designations is that ALS requires a paramedic be on board which allows them to perform on board everything a hospital emergency room can do to stabilize a patient.

Kieffer said there has been a paramedic shortage for ambulance districts because of the need for paramedics in hospitals.

Currently a Casselton Rural Ambulance District EMT is on track to complete Paramedic training. Once that happens, the district will be a 24/7 ALS service.

“We’re thinking about the future and what that looks like,” Kieffer said. “This year we are on track to complete 400 runs. The number of runs has steadily grown by about 35 runs annually since COVID. The town is growing and the Interstate is getting busier.”

Casselton, a small town with a big heart, is tightly knit, the streets are peaceful, and there’s a unique charm that you can only find in a place like this.

Recently, the Casselton Business Association took to Facebook to ask residents a simple yet profound question: “Why did you choose Casselton as your home?” The responses were both heartwarming and enlightening, providing a glimpse into the lives of those who call this town home.

From lifelong residents to newcomers seeking a change of pace, the appeal of Casselton is undeniable. The town’s sense of community, strategic location, and commitment to education and quality of life make it a unique and beloved place to live.

In this blog post, we delve into the many reasons why residents have chosen to plant their roots in Casselton.

    Family Ties and Lifelong Residency

For many, Casselton is more than just a town—it’s a legacy. Generations of families have grown up here, creating a lineage that is as much a part of the town as the town is a part of them. Catherine Orvik shares a light-hearted take, stating, “My parents moved there before I was born, so I had no choice but to live with them…” These deep-rooted connections create a sense of belonging that is hard to find elsewhere.

    The Allure of Small-Town Living

The allure of small-town living is undeniable in Casselton. Residents like Rebecca Christianson appreciate the close community and the smaller class sizes in schools, stating, “We wanted the kids to be in a good school but smaller class size.” The safety and familiarity that come with knowing your neighbors contribute to the overall sense of community that is so cherished in Casselton.

    Proximity to Larger Cities

Casselton’s strategic location close to Fargo offers the perfect balance between rural tranquility and urban convenience. For those who work in the city but crave the peace of a smaller town, Casselton provides the best of both worlds. Wanda Wilcox moved to Casselton to escape the hustle and bustle of West Fargo, finding solace in the small town’s charm while still enjoying proximity to the city.

    Educational Considerations

The quality of education in Casselton is a major draw for families. Melinda Schiltz chose Casselton for its school district, preferring the smaller class sizes for her children. This commitment to providing a supportive and personalized learning environment is a testament to the town’s dedication to its younger residents.

    Employment Opportunities

Job opportunities have also played a crucial role in attracting residents to Casselton. Ashley Olson shares her story of moving to Casselton when her husband took a position as the Paint Manager at Northern Plains Finishing, highlighting how employment opportunities have helped shape the community.

    Personal and Lifestyle Choices

Casselton appeals to a wide variety of personal preferences and lifestyles. From grandparents moving to be closer to their grandkids, to individuals like Stacy Boe who appreciate the community spirit and the supportive school system, Casselton has something for everyone. For those seeking financial advantages, the affordability of housing and lower commuting costs also add to the town’s appeal.

A Touch of Humor and Local Charm

The residents of Casselton certainly have a sense of humor, as showcased by the playful responses to the Facebook post. Thomas Kieffer adds a touch of wry humor with his comment to “Why Casselton” when he said, “Wasn’t me. Sometimes get pretty bitter about it in February,” highlighting the community’s ability to find humor even in the challenging winter months.

Meanwhile, others proudly express their love for local attractions, with multiple shoutouts to the Casselton Pizza Ranch, capturing the charm that is uniquely Casselton’s. This combination of wit and affection for local landmarks and businesses exemplifies the community’s playful spirit, making Casselton a town that knows how to smile and celebrate its unique personality.

by Becky Kingsley, who is a volunteer at the Casselton Heritage Center

We often get visitors at the Casselton Heritage Center who are searching for family history information. We have a variety of sources in our archives to help with such queries. We are fortunate to have many county and city histories available, not just from Casselton, but the surrounding areas as well.

In addition, we have a large collection of Casselton graduation pictures which we have indexed so we can find pictures of family members that way as well. We also find ourselves at the Cass County Reporter from time to time looking for information in their archives when we strike out in ours.

Several of Mrs. Potter’s notebooks; the open page contains information on the Wallace Grosvenor, who was the original builder of what is now known as the Woell Mansion.

The Reporter is the source of one of our most unique collections, which we refer to as "Mrs. Potter’s notebooks". The Potter family owned the Reporter for many years, and Clark Potter’s mother Helen had her own way of keeping information at hand for use in preparing the paper. She had a set of black binders alphabetized with pages of handwritten notes about many of the residents of Casselton and the surrounding rural areas. She wrote about townspeople, including birth, death, and marriage dates, as well as other information.

The Potter family donated these notebooks to the Heritage Center several years ago. We often can find information in the notebooks that help our family history visitors fill in gaps. The notebooks have been a great addition to our collection. I am sure Mrs. Potter would be surprised to see us using them so many years after she compiled them.

If you are interested in researching any of our collections mentioned, we are open by chance or appointment. We love visitors and enjoy sharing our archives and our beautiful stone church with people. Contact us through our Facebook page or by calling any of our board members whose contact information is found at www.casselton.com/casselton-heritage-center.
